National Biodiversity Network (NNB)

The Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea has promoted the project " Environment System 2010" which plays a strong choral action in support of the National Strategy for Biodiversity.
The crux of the system is constituted by the National Biodiversity Network (NNB), a network of Centres of Excellence (CoE) and National Focal Point (FP) who are accredited to international and national level for the management of biodiversity data, which share data and information on biodiversity through the portal developed by Altran Italy and Iptsat.

The water, which covers about 70% of the surface of the globe, is increasingly a critical resource for the survival of mankind. In recent decades, many initiatives have been moving in the direction of preservation and control of this resource, working in the control of some representative parameters of water quality such as water color, turbidity, Chlorophyll, Temperature, and Algal Distribution the dangerous pollution by hydrocarbons and/or chemicals.

The suspended matter, colored pigments, the presence of dissolved carbon and the fraction of humus affect the tristimulus color values of the visible (blue, green and red). The analysis of the three components of color (saturation, hue and intensity) is therefore sufficient to define the trophic status of a water mass, at least on a qualitative level in the three classes oligotrophic, mesotrophic and eutrophic.

For the analysis of water quality, you can get a measure of the turbidity directly from satellite and aerial imagery in terms of the Index of Transparency. With remote sensing it is also possible to evaluate the attenuation coefficient (Beam Attenuation Coefficient, BAC) of water, a parameter related to the suspended solids to well-defined bands of depth.

The chlorophyll content in water is an indication of the development and growth of the algal vegetation. The presence of chlorophyll in water greatly influences the radiance reflected from the surface of the same and for this reason it is determined from the analysis of satellite images.

AlgheThe use of thermal infrared spectral band (10.4 to 12.5 mm) allows you to create maps of surface temperature and to monitor changes over time. Using an appropriate geometric scale for the problem at hand you can also locate discharges precisely in the water body.

algal distribution

OlioUsing multispectral aircraft you can map the algal vegetation in shallow water and get through monitoring multitemporal monitoring of important biological parameters (among others: the Posidonia oceanica). the presence and development of slime on the surface of marine waters can also be determined using multitemporal analysis.

hydrocarbons and Chemicals at sea

The oil slicks on the sea surface may appear as a result of casualties suffered by ships and oil platforms or illegal discharges of oily waste. Remove and inspect these spots is paramount to limit their drastic effects on the marine environment. Using the radar image processing, you can define the exact position, the density and extent of oil spills at sea.

prevention and control of forest fires

Through the analysis of the area and the state of vegetative cover, it is possible to develop a software dedicated to the development of tools that can indicate the site where fire could possibly start, in which direction could propagate and with what intensity. An appropriate geographic information system allows a rapid assessment of the level of danger and the consequent planning of preventive works, mitigation and relief.

Iptsat through its vast experience is able to solve the problem of land fires creating specific databases and GIS dedicated, able to keep track of all the events that have happened in the area. All this in order to facilitate the monitoring, control and prevention, as established by Law no. 353 21/11/2000 "Framework Law on forest fires."
